Chasing truth, beauty, goodness, and all things naturally wholistic.

Faith over fear.

Ephesians 2:8-10

I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart since 2003. Together, we have four amazing children, by birth and adoption. When I am not homeschooling my favorite students, I spend my days on our 7-acre property where I try my best to love my family well and experiment with hobby homesteading. My favorite things to do are cultivate my ever-expanding gardens, wrangle chickens, ferment all the things, sourdough bake with einkorn flour, and figure out new ways to use herbal remedies and essential oils. I believe God has tasked us to be good stewards of our spaces in the world, and I guide my children to do the same.

I am a board member of The Sparrow Fund and an Empowered to Connect Facilitator. I love to dig in the dirt, cook nourishing food, capture beauty through my camera lens, watch the sunrise on the beach, and spend time with good literature on my porch while sipping on a hot cup of coffee.

DIY Thieves Hand Soap

Jump to recipe

I’ve mentioned before how much we love all things Thieves.  We use this versatile essential oil in just about every part of our lives to support a wholistic lifestyle and promote overall wellness.  In fact, Young Living has a whole line of Thieves products to help keep families healthy. Everything from toothpaste, to a variety of soaps, to household cleaner, to hand sanitizer.  It’s so nice to be able to keep our family healthy, without the use of harsh chemicals that may be found in most conventional store-bought products.  The Thieves products are constantly used every single day in our home, and they’re probably my most favorite ditch and switch products, especially the Thieves Household Cleaner.

Even without all of the incredible Thieves products that Young Living offers, the Thieves essential oil alone is a huge contributor to our family staying above the wellness line.  There are endless ways to use this essential oil, and my DIY Thieves hand soap is a perfect example.  With parenting four children who spend their school days at home, wrangling chickens, and 24/7 puppy training, we wash our hands … a lot.  I have peace of mind knowing that what we’re using to do that is safe, chemical-free, naturally-derived, and incredibly effective. The DIY Thieves Hand Soap protects our health and keeps us from spreading germs in a natural way.

It’s also missing all of the yucky additives like parabens, phthalates, and the ubiquitous fragrance, which is code word for over 3,500 ingredients that are not regulated by the FDA.  Companies aren’t required to disclose these chemical ingredients because they’re considered a proprietary “trade secret.” If companies did disclose what the fragrances consisted of, the ingredient list would likely be a mile long. Fragrance can include a super load of extremely toxic chemicals that should be avoided whenever possible.

Fortunately, the DIY Thieves Hand Soap is a perfect alternative to avoid those additives.  It’s easy peasy to make and it’s inexpensive. You’ll need a foaming hand soap dispenser or you can re-purpose Young Living’s hand soap dispensers like I do.  You’ll also need to grab some supplies, outlined below.  I use the second recipe because I think it’s easier and I like the outcome better, but both are equally effective.

Why Thieves?  The Thieves essential oil blend consists of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils. It was inspired by the story of four 15th-century spice merchants who formulated and wore a special concoction of clove, rosemary, and other herbs while they were robbing bodies during the plague. French authorities recognized that there was such protective value in this mixture that upon the thieves’ capture, they received a more merciful punishment on the condition that they divulge the ingredients in their secret formula. The story is actually found in the English archives under Marseille Vinegar – you can look it up if you’re a nerd like me!
