Chasing truth, beauty, goodness, and all things naturally wholistic.

Faith over fear.

Ephesians 2:8-10

I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart since 2003. Together, we have four amazing children, by birth and adoption. When I am not homeschooling my favorite students, I spend my days on our 7-acre property where I try my best to love my family well and experiment with hobby homesteading. My favorite things to do are cultivate my ever-expanding gardens, wrangle chickens, ferment all the things, sourdough bake with einkorn flour, and figure out new ways to use herbal remedies and essential oils. I believe God has tasked us to be good stewards of our spaces in the world, and I guide my children to do the same.

I am a board member of The Sparrow Fund and an Empowered to Connect Facilitator. I love to dig in the dirt, cook nourishing food, capture beauty through my camera lens, watch the sunrise on the beach, and spend time with good literature on my porch while sipping on a hot cup of coffee.

Oils for Scars

One of my daughters recently had surgery that resulted in a fairly long scar on her hip. The doctor told us to use Aquaphor to massage it to keep from tightening, but with it being rated a “5” on the Think Dirty app, I knew I could do better with essential oils. Using a dropper bottle, I filled it halfway with an organic Vitamin E oil, and then about 10 drops each of Myrrh, Helichrysum, and Lavender.

Myrrh was used by ancient Egyptians as an ingredient in 877 different recipes and it was used by Arabians for many different kinds of skin conditions (source). It was also listed in the herbalist book of my favorite feminist hero of the Middle Ages, Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179). If you don’t know who she is, you should. She’s amazing and broke all kinds of “rules” about what women were and were not allowed to do during that time.

Helichrysum is not only renowned for its incredible skin healing properties, it carries a host of other helpful properties too. Though it’s pricey, it’s a great oil to have around when needed. A little goes a long way!

Lavender is a modern go-to for many different types of skin conditions. It’s also incredibly calming and relaxing – I use it often for diffusing and it’s a staple ingredient in my Chillax roller. In my opinion, lavender essential oil should be in everyone’s natural first aid kit! People usually either really love or really dislike the aroma of lavender, but it is truly worth having around regardless of how you feel about the scent. It’s such a versatile oil!
