We took a trip down memory lane a few nights ago, looking through old pictures on my husband’s phone. It’s amazing how much change can happen in five years! Not only did my baby girl grow into a beautiful, hilarious, incredibly bright young woman, I transformed my health with wholistic lifestyle practices, too.
In 2015 at 35 years old, I was overweight and inflamed and on the verge of a Type II Diabetes diagnosis, along with high blood pressure. I didn’t make self care a priority and my body was screaming for help! The worst part was I was blind to how badly I actually felt.
I finally had a wakeup call a few years ago and started making wellness a priority. I got rid of toxic endocrine-disrupting household and personal care products, switching them for plant-based, natural alternatives. I cut out the processed food and chemical additives, and started fueling my body with real whole foods, organic whenever possible. I started prioritizing restorative sleep. I became more active … not in an exercise fanatic kind of way, just getting more movement throughout the day. I started supporting my emotional health with essential oils and spending more time in nature, and my spiritual health by making sure I was spending more time with Jesus.
Not only did I lose 40 lbs without really trying, my sugar counts are regulated now and I have so much more energy! I won’t claim that I “reversed” Type II Diabetes, but I will say that my body no longer reacts so poorly to sugar. I can even eat a few bites of dessert now and then without seeing skyrocketing numbers on the glucose monitor.
At 40 years old, I’m healthier now than any other time in my life.
And the other incredible outcome is that I learned how to support my family’s health and wellness, naturally. We don’t get sick as much because we’re fueling our bodies properly, and we’re all so much healthier and happier! It’s amazing how much better we feel when we prioritize wholistic wellness. We still have occasional treats and processed foods (the world would be a terrible place without Reese’s Cups!), but an 80/20 goal keeps our bodies healthy and resilient while still having fun. It’s not an all-or-nothing lifestyle. Implementing slow, small changes can add up to big impacts in overall wellness!
Friends, this natural, wholistic lifestyle works. I am living proof that when given the right tools, our bodies are perfectly designed to heal themselves!
