Steams
An herbal steam is used to extract the therapeutic constituents out of herbs (the original essential oils) to be breathed in. They are particularly useful during times of illness to relieve congestion as well as offering soothing comfort. And the great thing is anyone can make an herbal steam because they are quick and easy!
Preparing an herbal steam
- Herbs are placed in a bowl of just-boiled water, and then breathed in for 5-10 minutes at a time:
- Position your head over the bowl with a covered towel as a tent to hold the steam in
- With eyes closed and face 5-10 inches away from the hot water, breathe the steam in for 5-10 minutes at a time
Herbs to consider
For herbal steams, choose herbs with a high level of volatile oils to take advantage of the aromatic (fragrant) qualities. How do you know if an herb is high in volatile oils? It will have a strong fragrance! Herbs that promote congestion clearing are particularly helpful. Ones to consider are:
- Eucalyptus
- Peppermint
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Lavender
- Basil
- Chamomile
- Citrus fruit peels
For children, consider gentler herbs, like lavender, chamomile, basil, and citrus peels. Letting them help choose the herbs and then make their steam is a fun project to do together!
