Art Appreciation & Artist Studies is a four-year guide for classically educating communities.
It is an informational guide that includes lists of many of the most famous artists from the different art styles and eras, as well as ideas for possible corresponding art projects. This guide is not a complete art appreciation or study curriculum – it is a guide meant to help you to design an overview of art history through the study of artists and art projects created in the spirit of their work. This guide is designed for classically educating communities with multiple ages (preschool – 6th grade) in a group. It is meant to offer a general structure from which to build a 4-year curriculum, including 14 artist studies/projects per year. It was created to complement a 4-cycle, 28-week classical memory work curriculum, but would complement any homeschool studies.
The first seven lessons of each cycle introduce the seven elements of art. A variety of free resources to introduce these concepts are available online. Likewise, a book such as How To Teach Art to Children by Joy Evans may be useful (this book is required for one of the art projects, but could be omitted if another project is chosen). The first seven lessons often lend themselves to modern artists and art projects to demonstrate the elements of art. But the remaining lessons introduce artists from all the major eras.
It is suggested that a brief biography of each artist be shared during the art lesson, as well as an overview of the art style for which they are famous. The Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists series, as well as online websites, are great resources.
Resources that are NOT included, but required to complete the listed art projects are:
- Discovering Great Artists, written by MaryAnn F. Kohl (approximately $15)
- Great American Artists, written by MaryAnn F. Kohl (approximately $18)
- How To Teach Art to Children, written by Joy Evans (approximately $18)
Art projects are suggestions only, and may be substituted or amended, depending on the students’ ages and capabilities. Most projects refer to a specific book lesson resource, but five of the lessons do not have references to specific lessons. Instead, they offer general ideas for projects. Some of the project ideas suggest slight differences from the referenced lesson to demonstrate a particular element of art. Supplies lists are not included to allow as much flexibility as possible.
