Faith over fear.

Ephesians 2:8-10

I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart since 2003. Together, we have four amazing children, by birth and adoption. When I am not teaching fine arts to my favorite upper school students at our incredible classical Christian school, I spend my days on our 7-acre property where I try my best to love my family well and experiment with hobby homesteading. My favorite things to do are cultivate my ever-expanding gardens, wrangle chickens, ferment all the things, sourdough bake with einkorn flour, and figure out new ways to use essential oils. I believe God has tasked us to be good stewards of our spaces in the world, and I guide my children to do the same.

I am a board member of The Sparrow Fund and an Empowered to Connect Facilitator. I love to dig in the dirt, cook nourishing food, capture beauty through my camera lens, watch the sunrise on the beach, and spend time with good literature on my porch while sipping on a hot cup of coffee.

His big news

In December, we made a big decision to enroll Dumpling in a local homeschool tutoring program that specializes in helping students who have ADHD and learning differences.  The program was created for kids just like my guy.  It was a difficult choice because doing so would drastically change our schedule, in addition to paying the tuition fee.  But after a lot of deliberation and prayer, we enrolled him in the program with the hope of it really helping him grasp concepts that I’ve been struggling to teach him at home.  With the plan to re-evaluate his progress at the end of the school year, he started “class” about two months ago.

I’m so thrilled to write that he has completely blown us away with how much he has excelled since his first day of class.  He’s mastered concepts that I didn’t imagine were possible even in this school year, let alone in just two months!  His tutors meticulously work together to come up with plans for him to succeed at learning.  They are absolutely incredible and have quickly become worth their weight in gold to me!

And the best part is that, through all of this, Dumpling has gained such confidence in being able to “do his schoolwork.”  He’s just so stinkin’ proud of himself!  And so am I.  I could simply sit and cry thinking about all he’s accomplishing right now!  And to think we were considering not doing this program!

When we first enrolled him, I was a little worried it might be a kick to the ego if his tutors were able to teach him concepts that I couldn’t.  Silly, I know.  Just being honest.

Fortunately, that hasn’t been an issue.  I’m happy to admit that I needed help.  After trying so many different avenues for years, I realize that I simply don’t have the expertise or wherewithal (or time!) to try to understand how to teach him in a way that works for him.

His tutors are phenomenal and are so skilled in helping students just like him.  And it seriously shows.  Wow.

The beauty of homeschooling is that we get to re-evaluate and make changes as needed to support each of our children.  So grateful for that!
